N. CHARLESTON, S.C. – In just the fifth overtime CAA men's basketball championship game in league history, it was the No. 1 seeded College of Charleston that outlasted No. 2 seed Northeastern on Monday night, 83-76, at the North Charleston Coliseum.
First Team All-CAA standouts Joe Chealey (32 points) and
Vasa Pusica (30 points) went punch-for-punch all night long as the Huskies led by 13 at half before the Cougars fought back from a 17-point second half deficit to force overtime.
The Huskies shot 49.1% from the field (27-of-55) and 15-of-27 from three, led by Pusica's third 30-point game of the season on 10-of-20 shooting (6-of-11 from three) to go along with four rebounds and four assists pace the Huskies.
Shawn Occeus added 19 points (7-of-10 shooting) and
Maxime Boursiquot contributed 12 points and five rebounds.
Donnell Gresham Jr. led the way on the boards with 12, adding eight points.
Chealey (7-of-16 shooting) was one of three Cougars to finish in double-digits, followed by Grant Riller with 20 points and Jarrell Branley with 18 and a team-high 11 rebounds. As a team, Charleston shot 46.6% (27-of-58), and nearly 60% in the second half (16-of-27).
Boursiquot got things going for the Huskies with a jam and continued on from there. The sophomore netted the first seven points of the game for Northeastern following up with a trey, and then another rim-shattering slam to head into the first media with a 7-5 advantage.
The two teams battled with the Huskies maintaining the lead for the rest of the first half. After Charleston cut the lead to just one, 22-21 with 5:16 to go, Occeus went off from deep hitting three-straight treys (and one) to rattle off 10-straight Husky points and give the Huskies an 11-point, 34-23 advantage.
Charleston battled back in the second half with an 8-0 run spanning a two-and-a-half-minute stretch, but following a Coen timeout, the crowd quieted following a Pusica three to make it a 47-38 ballgame.
The Cougars continued to claw back into the game, cutting the deficit to five on a bucket from Brantley with 8:34 to go in regulation before a three from Boursiquot and layup from Occeus brought the Husky lead back up to 10 at 58-48. A 9-0 run from Charleston ensued, capped by a lay-in from Chealey with 3:20 to play brought it down to a one-point game at 58-57.
But Pusica would not be denied, and with the Huskies out of timeouts and clinging to a one-point advantage, buried a three from the wing and, after a big Northeastern defensive stand, launched a deep three attempt as he was fouled by Cameron Johnson. Pusica would hit two-of-three free throws to put the Huskies back up by six.
The Cougars brought the game back to two points with less than a minute to play before Chealey drove to the bucket for the layup to tie the game at 65 all with 18 seconds left. After the inbound,
Donnell Gresham Jr. flew through the lane before having the ball stripped with 3.4 seconds to go to send the game to overtime.
It wasn't until the extra session that Charleston took its first lead of the night as Brantley hit a jumper on the opening possession, and opened a six-point lead off a three from Marquise Pointer.
A three from Brace with 1:05 cut the Northeastern deficit to three, but that's as close as the Huskies would get as free throws from Chealey in the final 40 seconds put the game out of reach.
