BROOKLINE, Mass. – Locked in a defensive battle with Delaware on Thursday night, the Northeastern women's soccer team was unable to beat the Blue Hens to the golden goal as the Huskies were defeated, 2-1, during the 99th minute at Parsons Field.
Â
Tatiana Ortega scored the equalizing goal for Northeastern (4-9-1, 1-3-1 CAA) during the 54th minute. With the Huskies dictating possession after halftime,
Alexis Legowski headed a second ball forward to Ortega, who remained onside before threading the inside of the right post.
Â
Ortega's goal was the fourth of six consecutive Northeastern attempts that began the second half after Delaware (9-5-0, 4-1-0 CAA) had outgained the Huskies, 7-1 in first-half attempts – including a 4-0 mark in attempts on target.
Â
Anna Diffendal put the Blue Hens in front during the 19th minute, sending in a 12-yard ball that had taken two deflections off NU defenders.
Â
Northeastern nearly won the match during the fifth minute of extra time when Oliva Ware's one-time effort inside the six-yard box was blocked down by the left arm of Maria Gentile to no referee whistle.
Â
Delaware capitalized on the omitted call, scoring the match-winner three minutes later. Countering, Riley Dixon drove a 40-yard strike that ricocheted off the crossbar and landed at the feet of the charging Sara D'Appolonia, who beat the out-of-position
Megan Adams.
Â
Adams finished with four saves while Kamryn Stablein made three.
