SYRACUSE, N.Y.— The No. 3/3 Northeastern women's hockey team, scored four of its six goals on the power play to secure a 6-3 win over Syracuse and the series sweep on Saturday evening at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
Matti Hartman claimed her 50th career point in the victory as ten Northeastern players notched a point in the game, with
Alina Mueller leading the way with four points off a goal and three assists.
The first period of play ended with five total goals being scored by both sides, as Northeastern (3-0-0) came out on top 3-2 over Syracuse (0-5-0). While the Orange struck just 3:33 into the first period, with a goal from Kelli Rowswell, the Huskies countered with two quick goals as freshmen
Kate Holmes and
Katy Knoll scored their first career goals.
Holmes evened the score at 1-1 off assists from Mueller and
Veronika Pettey at the 5:15 mark. Just under three minutes later,
Katy Knoll scored a power play goal to put the Huskies up 2-1, with assists from
Skylar Fontaine and
Codie Cross. Syracuse was then able to even the score at 2-2 with a goal from Lindsay Eastwood at 11:31.
The Huskies were not to be denied of the lead in the first period as
Chloe Aurard scored her first of two goals on the day at the 18:05 mark for the 3-2 lead. Aurard's goal was on the power play and assisted by
Mia Brown and Mueller.
Just 50 seconds into the second frame, Syracuse's Lauren Bellefontaine scored on the power play to even the score at 3-3. Northeastern then claimed its third power play goal of the night as Mueller scored at 4:45 to put the Huskies ahead 4-3. Mueller's goal was the game-winner for the Huskies and was assisted by
Brooke Hobson and
Veronika Pettey.
As the third period began, Aurard once again capitalized on the power play and scored to stretch the Huskies lead to 5-3. Aurard's second goal of the evening was assisted by Mueller and
Mia Brown.
For the icing on the cake,
Matti Hartman scored at 8:07 to claim her 50th career point for Northeastern. Hartman's goal, assisted by Fontaine, was the final goal for the Huskies in the 6-3 victory.
Aerin Frankel claimed her third victory of the season in the win, with 19 total saves.
