Volleyball stymied by Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Wrapping up its four-match CAA road stretch on Wednesday, the Northeastern women's volleyball team was unable to pull out a win at Hofstra as the Huskies lost in straight sets at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center (25-20, 25-18, 25-18).

Natalie Shollin led Northeastern (7-9, 1-3 CAA) with 10 kills and two blocks, going errorless on 14 attacks to finish with the team high, .714 hit percentage. Samantha Shupe totaled 27 assists for the Huskies, eclipsing the 2,000 career mark during the second set.

Northeastern took the early 5-2 lead before siding out with Hofstra (9-7, 2-2 CAA), making the home team burn a timeout with NU on top, 9-6. The Pride responded by winning 11 of the ensuing 13 points to build as high as a six-point lead, swinging .400 (15 kills, three errors) during the first set against Northeastern's .250 clip (11 kills, four errors).

Kayla Martin served the Huskies through their six-point run during the second set that wiped away Hofstra's early 8-4 advantage. However, after Athena Ardila had connected on the insurance kill at 11-9, the Pride turned in the 10-1 scoring run to claim the set, collectively hitting .480 (14 kills, two errors).

Ardila and Shollin registered consecutive solo blocks to help Northeastern front the 9-5 lead during the third set, but the Huskies were unable to keep their foot on the gas pedal as the Pride went on to land 19 third-set kills and clinch the match.

Laura Masciullo totaled the match high, 16 kills, for Hofstra, hitting .444 on 29 attacks. Luisa Sydlik recorded 32 assists and nine digs.
