Huskies fall short to Delaware in CAA Championship

Anderson nets lone goal as Huskies fall 2-1 to No. 11 Blue Hens

NEWARK, Del. – Kasidy Anderson's third-quarter goal brought the third-seeded Northeastern field hockey team within a 2-1 margin of one-seeded No. 11 Delaware during Sunday's CAA championship game, despite the Huskies finishing runner-up to the Blue Hens by the same score at Fred P. Rullo Stadium.

Northeastern (11-8, 3-3 CAA) battled hard after conceding two goals to Delaware (16-3, 6-0 CAA) during the first quarter.  Lotte de Koning, who was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, opened the scoring for the Blue Hens during the fourth minute of play while Femke Strien – the 2019 CAA Player of the Year – went on to stick the eventual game-winning goal seconds before the quarter break.

Facing a 2-0 halftime deficit, the Huskies rebounded greatly, relying on pressuring play from their forwards to swing momentum in their direction. Julia Gluyas completed her CAA tournament with five saves during the championship round, bailing out the Huskies by stymieing Delaware's potent offense.

Midway through the third quarter, Alli Meehan assisted on Northeastern's lone goal, streaking forward and dishing the ball in front of the net to Anderson, who halved the NU deficit. From then onward, Northeastern continued to create offensive opportunities, but was unable to extend the game.

Second-year head coach Shelly Morris guided the Huskies to their first CAA championship game since 2013. Northeastern celebrated three 2019 CAA All-Tournament Team honorees: junior goalkeeper Julia Gluyas, junior forward Camille O'Conor and sophomore forward Lexie Dunleavy.

Sunday's game signifies the end of the road for seniors Kasidy Anderson, Megan Barrett, Sam Bodo, Lauren Brewster, Bella Cuomo, Shawn Davenport and Lauren Feeney.
