PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Late goals from sophomores
Tyler Madden and
Jordan Harris were not enough to send the No. 14 Northeastern men's hockey team (5-4-2, 2-3-1 Hockey East) past No. 10 Providence (6-3-2, 4-2-1 Hockey East), falling 3-2 on the road in game one of the weekend series.

A physical first period gave way to major defensive plays by the Huskies, with
Craig Pantano leading the charge. Through the first twenty, the fifth-year graduate transfer kept the Friars at bay, making 17 stops between the pipes. A native of Bridgewater, Mass., Pantano closed out the night with 35 total saves. Â

The Friars cut the scoring drought with a quick shot late in the second, putting the Huskies at 1-0 deficit heading into the final frame. Looking to get Northeastern back in the game, Madden found the pass from
Aidan McDonough and
Matt Filipe and lifted the puck past Providence goaltender Michael Lackey to lock up the score at 1-1 at 5:57 in the third period. Despite an extra attacker power-play shot by
Jordan Harris in the waning seconds of the contest, a pair of late-game Providence goals secured the game for the Friars and setback the Huskies, 3-2.

In addition to an extra-man tally, Northeastern's top-ranked penalty kill unit remained untarnished on the night, shutting down all three Providence extra-man opportunities.
