BOSTON – DespiteÂ
Natalie Shollin,Â
Erica Staunton andÂ
Athena Ardila each finishing with double-digit kill totals on Saturday, the Northeastern women's volleyball team was unable to shake off Hofstra as the Huskies lost a four-set match to the Pride at Cabot Center (25-18, 25-23, 20-25, 25-23).
Â
Shollin led all attackers with 14 kills while Staunton and Ardila posted 13 and 12 kills, respectively.Â
Samantha Shupe notched her seventh double-double of the season, pacing the Huskies in assists (44), digs (16) and service aces (two).
Â
After conceding the opening set to the visitors, Northeastern (12-12, 6-6 CAA) was in prime position to even the match during the second set, building as large as a seven-point lead at 16-9. However, a series of NU attack errors allowed Hofstra (15-9, 8-4 CAA) to work itself back into the set before Laura Masciullo's three-kill streak helped the Pride complete their 11-2 scoring run.
Â
Staunton connected on two kills late to bring Northeastern even at 22-22, but Hofstra converted its second of two set points to grab the two-set advantage.
Â
The Huskies enjoyed their best attacking numbers during the third set, combining to swing 17 kills against three errors (hitting .350). NU forced the Pride into burning an early timeout at 11-5 prior to crafting as high as an eight-point lead en route to winning the set in wire-to-wire fashion.
Â
Facing a 22-14 deficit during the fourth set, Northeastern spurred a seven-point run off Shupe's serve, threatening to extend the match. Kills by Staunton and Ardila completed the Huskies' set-tying, 9-1 scoring run, but Hofstra managed to beat NU to the finish line, breaking the tie with two sudden points to claim the 25-23 victory and clinch the match.
Â
Laura Masciullo tallied 12 kills, 12 digs, four blocks and an ace to lead the Pride.
