REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. -- After starting off the season with a home sweep of No. 12 Pennsylvania last weekend, No. 6 Northeastern travelled West to Redwood Shores, Calif. to race No. 18 Oregon State and No. 2 Washington on Saturday, as well as No. 13 Stanford on Sunday. After falling to Washington on Saturday morning in hard fought races, Northeastern rebounded by making some adjustments and improvements and came back to sweep both Oregon State on Saturday afternoon and Stanford on Sunday morning.
The Stanford racecourse at Redwood Shores is one of the best match racing courses in the country with 2000-meters of protected water and minimal wind and current. A gutsy early-season weekend of racing against west coast teams that have the benefit of training outdoors on the water and in good conditions all winter, the weekend was marked by a lot of good racing with all Huskies crews making positive adjustments and improvements over the course of the weekend of competition.
Northeastern raced Washington hard down the racecourse in all three eights. In all three races, Washington was able to outpace Northeastern in the last 600-meters of the race where much of the margin was gained.
Northeastern's strength and depth enabled the Huskies to sweep the Beavers in all events. Oregon State rowed well and hard and was good competition. In each event, Northeastern gradually opened up on Oregon State steadily over the entire 2000-meters distance.
Northeastern's strength and depth were again put on display as the Huskies swept the Cardinal in all three eights. Northeastern dominated the second and third varsity events outpacing Stanford steadily over the 2000-meter stretch. In a fast and hard fought varsity eight battle, Northeastern gained an open water advantage by the 900-meter mark and held that margin throughout the second 1000-meters and into a strong final sprint to secure a win by open water.
The Huskies will be back home this weekend when Northeastern battles Boston University for the Arlett Cup.
