Orriols named Leadership and Sport Excellence Award winner by the CAA

BOSTON -- Northeastern women's rowing senior Adrienne Orriols has been named a recipient of the CAA's second annual Leadership and Sport Excellence Award, as announced by the conference on Tuesday.

One student-athlete was chosen from each of the 19 other sports sponsored by the CAA for embodying the highest standards of leadership, integrity, teamwork and sportsmanship in his or her academic and athletic achievements. The award mirrors the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award, which is presented in men's and women's basketball, and the Chuck Boone Leadership Award, which is presented in football.

Northeastern has had a recipient in both seasons since the award's inception, with swimming and diving's Carly Schnabel being honored last year.

Orriols, the team captain for the past two seasons, has been instrumental in the team's four CAA titles and NCAA Tournament appearances since her arrival on campus. Off the water, the behavioral neuroscience major just graduated with a 3.638 grade point average, bolstered by a perfect 4.0 this spring semester. That average earned her both Dean's List and Top Dog (3.8-plus GPA) distinctions for the semester. She is also a four-time Commissioners Academic Award winner and a three time CRCA National Scholar Athlete Award winner.

Orriols was also a major player in all the team's community service activities, which earned them the Community Service Award at this year's Howlin' Huskies Awards. She led the team's "Pull for a Cure" initiative at the Head of the Charles that raised over $8,000 for breast cancer research, in addition to helping prepare and serve dinner for underprivileged members of the local community and putting together packages for local schoolchildren through Cradles to Crayons.
