BOSTON – Hosting the preseason No. 6 team out of the ACC, the Northeastern women's volleyball team gave Syracuse a fight on Friday night at Cabot Center, despite receiving the straight-set defeat from the Orange (25-19, 25-17, 25-15).
Â
Senior middle
Natalie Shollin led Northeastern (6-6) with eight kills on 16 attacks (hit .375) in addition to contributing two of the Huskies' three blocks.
Liz Carroll (13 assists) and
Samantha Shupe (10) split the majority of the NU setting while libero
Kayla Martin notched seven digs and four assists.
Â
Ella Saada powered 17 kills for Syracuse (2-4), which hit .407 across the match, landing 46 kills on 86 attacks. Marina Markova paired 11 kills with seven digs for the Orange, accounting for four of the visitors' six service aces.
Â
Northeastern did not offer Syracuse much separation during the opening set. Daphnis thundered a kill from the right pin to bring the Huskies within a point of the Orange at 6-5, later going back-to-back at the net with Shollin to trim the visiting lead to 13-11.
Â
Consecutive kills by Ardila and Shollin lowered Northeastern's trailing margin to one point at 18-17, although Syracuse managed to end the set by winning seven of the final nine points.
Â
Northeastern sided out well during the early stages of the second set, achieving its eighth tied score at 10-10. However, the Orange broke away quickly, tallying 18 second set kills on 29 attacks (hit .448) to build the two-set advantage.
Â
Erica Staunton, Shupe and
Athena Ardila provided three kills during the Huskies' four-point run that put them in front early, 4-2.
Nailah Jenkins was involved in Northeastern's two blocks that leveled the set at 11-11, although Syracuse proceeded to break the ensuing 12-12 tie with its match-clinching, 12-1 scoring run.
