Matt Filipe Signs with Boston Bruins

BOSTON - Northeastern's Matt Filipe has signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League, the organization announced Sunday evening. Filipe, a native of Lynnfield, Mass., is a four-year letterwinner for the Huskies who served as assistant captain last season and is part of the second winningest class in program history.

"I'm extremely thrilled for Matt Filipe for this great opportunity with his hometown team," said Fernie Flaman Head Men's Hockey Coach Jim Madigan. "Matt was an excellent and productive player for us the last four years and was a key part in helping us to three straight Beanpot championships, a Hockey East championship and two NCAA tournament appearances. We can't thank him enough for his leadership on and off the ice and all his contributions to our program. We wish him nothing but the best as he begins his professional career."

The assistant captain was originally drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the third round of the 2016 NHL Draft and helped lead the Huskies with 31 goals, 44 assists and a +25 during his 136-game career at Northeastern. Filipe scored a goal and recorded an assist against Boston College as a junior to help the Huskies win their third Hockey East Championship. He graduated with a degree in business this past May.

"I'm so excited to sign with the Bruins," Filipe said. "I grew up rooting for the Bruins and I couldn't be more thrilled that that's the organization I'm going to get a chance to play for."

Filipe is the fourth player from the 2019-20 team to sign a professional contract this offseason. Tyler Madden signed with the Los Angeles Kings of the NHL (story here), Biagio Lerario signed with the Manitoba Moose of the AHL (story here) and Brendan van Riemsdyk signed with the Reading Royals of the ECHL (story here).
