BOSTON – Formally making its varsity debut, the Northeastern esports program will kick off the department's 2020-21 athletics calendar on Saturday, Sept. 19, as the Huskies' Overwatch and Rocket League teams both open their competitive seasons.
Â
OVERWATCH
Northeastern is one of 32 Overwatch teams competing in the two-day, virtual Harrisburg University Esports (HUE) Invitational, as powered by Nerd Street Gamers. Played under a best-of-five format, the tournament's eight groups – comprised of four teams apiece – will open round-robin play at 1 p.m. with the top two teams from each group advancing to the 16-team, single-elimination knockout stage.
Â
Drawn into Group F, the Huskies' round-robin will consist of matches against Michigan, Purdue and St. Ambrose. Should Northeastern qualify for the knockout stage, the Huskies would contest their Round of 16 match on Saturday at 7 p.m. and seek placement into Sunday's quarterfinal (1 p.m.), semifinal (3 p.m.) and championship (5 p.m.) rounds.
Â
Each of Northeastern's HUE matches (except matches against Harrisburg University) will be streamed by short delay via
the Huskies' Twitch channel.

ROCKET LEAGUE
Seeking entry into the fall 2020 Collegiate Rocket League (CRL) national championship field, Northeastern will compete in the first of two Open Qualifiers on Sunday. With more than 290 teams attempting to qualify, the Huskies – who won the fall 2017 title as a club team – are looking to play their way back into the 16-team Eastern Conference round-robin that opens on Oct. 5.
Â
Sunday's East Qualifier will be comprised of double-elimination play beginning with best-of-three matches that expand to best-of-five matches during the Round of 16. The final eight teams remaining will earn automatic placement into Eastern Conference league play.
Â
Information regarding start times and opponents pertaining to Sunday's Open Qualifier for the Eastern Conference are yet to be released. Fans are encouraged to read the esports coverage disclaimer above.
