Murphy's Hat Trick Leads No. 4 Huskies over Merrimack, 5-0

BOX SCORE (PDF) | POSTGAME PRESS CONFERENCE

BOSTON - Maureen Murphy tallied her first hat trick at Northeastern, and second of her career, while Aerin Frankel posted her third consecutive shutout, and sixth of the season, to lead the fourth-ranked Huskies (10-1-1 Hockey East) to a 5-0 win over Merrimack (1-10-0 Hockey East) on Friday inside Matthews Arena. Frankel has not allowed a goal in over 200 minutes and now has a school record 25 career shutouts.

Kate Holmes and Katy Knoll also notched goals for the Huskies as NU outshot the Warriors by an impressive, 43-16, margin. Chloe Aurard added two assists, while Katie Cipra and Skylar Fontaine also added helpers for the Huskies.

The Huskies only allowed three shots on goal in the opening period, dominating play and spending most of the game in the Warriors' offensive end. The Huskies broke through midway through the first period on a goal from Holmes, and Murphy added a second less than one minute later to give Northeastern a 2-0 lead. Northeastern scored its third short-handed goal of the season in the second period as Murphy stripped the puck away and beat the Merrimack goaltender on a nice shot for a breakaway goal as the Huskies went up by three.

Murphy would record her hat trick with an even-strength goal five minutes into the third period, and Knoll found the back of the net for the fifth and final goal of the game. Murphy posted a hat trick in just her third game for the Huskies, while Frankel made 9-of-16 saves in the final period.

Northeastern will travel to Merrimack tomorrow for a 3 p.m. game inside Lawler Rink with streaming available on College Sports Live.
