BOSTON – With
Mide Oriyomi and
Stella Clark scoring in double figures on Thursday, the Northeastern women's basketball team staged an 18-4 run during the second half to nearly complete its comeback against Hofstra, despite coming up short, 68-57, at Cabot Center.
Â
Oriyomi paired 17 points with five rebounds to pace the Huskies, leading NU in offense for the third consecutive game. Clark matched 12 points with five rebounds and five assists while rookie reserve
Maddie Vizza added seven points off the bench.
Â
After establishing the early, 5-0 lead, Northeastern (0-5, 0-3 CAA) was plagued by turnovers, recording nine during the opening quarter that contributed to 14 unanswered points for the visitors.
Â
Hofstra (4-5, 2-1 CAA) took full advantage of the Huskies' nine-minute scoring lull, charging ahead to the 30-17 halftime lead with seven different players landing in the score column.
Â
Facing a 48-30 deficit through three quarters, Northeastern caught fire from downtown early during the fourth quarter. Clark, Vizza and
Anna Boruta drained three straight triples for the Huskies, who slid within seven points of the Pride, 50-43, with six minutes remaining in regulation.
Â
On its next possession,
Ayanna Dublin completed Northeastern's electrifying scoring run on a dime from Clark, bringing NU within five points of the Pride for the first time during the second half. However, Clark misfired on two 3-point attempts that could have brought the Huskies closer as Hofstra wrapped up the game at the foul line.
Â
JaKayla Brown led the visitors with 23 points and five rebounds. Jahsyni Knight added 13 points, four rebounds and four steals for the Pride while Jaylen Hines registered 10 points, six rebounds, two assists and three steals.
