Huskies Beat James Madison in Thriller and Advance to CAA Championships

BOX SCORE (PDF)

HARRISONBURG, Va
. — Senior forward Benjamin Klingen found the back of the net twice and redshirt sophomore goaltender Colby Hegarty stopped eight shots to lead Northeastern men's soccer (11-5-2, 5-2-1 CAA) in a comeback 2-1 victory over James Madison (11-5-1, 5-3-0 CAA) on Saturday night.
  • James Madison scored with just a minute to play in the first, but Klingen tied it up after taking a pass from Marin-Thomson (9) and finishing a beautiful run to get his fifth goal of the season in the 68th minute.
  • Klingen then decided to get his brace and close out the Dukes later on, doing it all by himself this time. He took the ball after two players collided and powered through JMU's back line to get his sixth of the season and win the game for Northeastern in the 86th minute.
  • Hegarty's eight saves kept the Huskies in the game. In the 87th minute, James Madison had a free kick that went under the wall, but an outstretched Hegarty stopped the ball from finding the back of the net.
  • The game was a matchup of offensive firepower, but the Huskies outshot JMU 19-16.
  • With the regular season concluding, the Huskies have had one of the best offensive seasons in program history and one of the best in the CAA. They are tied for first in the CAA in goals scored with 40 this season and lead the league in shots with 287.
  • The Huskies have scored 40 goals just three times in the past 37 years. This season, their 40 goals is the most since the 2001 season, when they scored 46. The Northeastern single-season record is 47 goals and was achieved in 1999.
  • With the win, the Huskies have clinched the second seed in the 2021 CAA Men's Soccer Championships, to be held at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y.
  • This is the first CAA Championship appearance for head coach Chris Gbandi and his best season as Northeastern's head coach.
As they close out the regular season with a win, the No. 2 seed Huskies will now turn their heads to Hempstead, N.Y. as they will take on the No. 3 seed Elon Phoenix in the CAA semifinal on Thursday, November 11 at 7:30 p.m. on FloFC.
