BOSTON – Building on its first semester as a varsity title last fall, the Northeastern League of Legends team has been off to another flashy start during the opening weeks of the winter collegiate esports calendar. As of Feb. 9, the Huskies have sported an 8-3-1 record across all winter competitions, elevating their cumulative 2020-21 season record to 21-8-1.
2021 COLLEGE LEAGUE OF LEGENDS SEASON // 5-0 Esports Collegiate
Making its varsity debut in the 2021 running of the College League of Legends season – the title's formal collegiate national championship – Northeastern is off to an undefeated start within its new conference home, Esports Collegiate (ESC). The Huskies stand alone atop of the league standings with their 5-0 record (15 points), having won eight of the nine maps in which they have competed.
After opening ESC action with the 2-1 win against Western Michigan (Jan. 23), Northeastern swept two maps against conference heavyweight Buffalo (Jan. 27) – the national champion of the title's fall 2020 ancillary invitational. From there, the Huskies earned a win against Ohio by forfeiture before notching two more sweeps against Bowling Green (Feb. 3) and Akron (Feb. 4).
As Northeastern arrives at the midway point of the ESC schedule, the Huskies have their eyes set on a handful of challenging league matches. NU has yet to face three of the four programs that are currently tied for second place in the conference with 4-1 records: Kent State (Feb. 13), Miami – Ohio (Feb. 20) and Northern Illinois (Feb. 24).

Coming off its runner-up finish in the fall 2020 Upsurge Contenders League (UCL) – a collegiate-amateur event – Northeastern is fully invested into bringing home gold inside the 24-team winter 2021 tournament.
Competing in the six-team Infernal Region, the Huskies were among three of the group's squads that started with a 2-0 record. NU collected its first-ever varsity win against the amateur club, mAAd city, on Jan. 26 before registering another two-map sweep of Cosa Horizon on Feb. 2.
Despite its 2-1 setback against CBT on Feb. 9, Northeastern remains in prime position to advance to the tournament's 16-team knockout stage.

Northeastern was one of nine teams that entered the Major Tournament of the 2021 Grand Rapids Rift Clash, as hosted on Feb. 6 and Feb. 7 by the West Michigan Sports Commission.
The Huskies split their six round-robin maps inside the four-team Bran Pool, bouncing back from their 2-0 defeat to Michigan State to trade maps with Northwood and sweep Bethany Lutheran (junior varsity).
Pitted against the top finisher in the Arya Pool during the event's semifinals, Northeastern went the distance during its knockout match against Bethany Lutheran (varsity), despite dropping the decisive third map.
