NEWARK, Del. – Backed by
Mide Oriyomi's third double-double of the season and
Stella Clark's string of fourth quarter 3-pointers on Sunday, the Northeastern women's basketball team nearly turned the tables on first-place Delaware, but were unable to hold on as the Huskies were defeated, 65-59, at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Â
Oriyomi shined for 18 points and 12 rebounds, hitting eight of her 14 looks from the field. Considering her four games against the Blue Hens this season, the NU sophomore has averaged 16.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per series outing while pocketing a pair of double-double performances.
Â
Clark finished with 15 points, seven assists and two steals, factoring in heavily to the Huskies' 3-point shooting barrage that started the fourth quarter.
Ayanna Dublin worked her way to eight points, six rebounds and three assists while
Mossi Staples tagged seven points off the bench.
Â
Facing as large as a 12-point deficit during the third quarter, Northeastern (3-10, 2-8 CAA) offloaded five 3-pointers during the opening six minutes of the fourth quarter to take the lead. After Oriyomi and
Anna Boruta had traded respective looks on the left and right wings, Clark followed with three unanswered downtown baskets, putting the Huskies in front, 54-52, with 4:06 remaining in regulation.
Â
Burning a timeout to its advantage, Delaware (14-2, 11-1 CAA) succeeded in cooling Northeastern's hot shooting as the Blue Hens responded with 13 consecutive points to control the insurmountable lead.
Â
The Huskies collectively shot 49 percent from the field on Sunday while holding Delaware to a 36-percent clip from the floor. However, NU allowed the Blue Hens to snag 20 offensive rebounds, yielding the hosts a 17-point advantage in second chance points.
Â
Ty Battle and Jasmine Dickey both double-doubled to lead Delaware. Battle scored 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting and secured 11 rebounds while Dickey logged 17 points, 10 rebounds and four steals.
