BOSTON – With rookies
Defne Arliel and
Maddie Donaphon stealing the Senior Day spotlight on Sunday, the Northeastern volleyball team bounced back to salvage a split of its weekend series against Delaware, earning the straight-set victory at Cabot Center: 25-23, 25-15, 25-16.
Â
Arliel recorded the second double-double of her freshman season, pairing her team high, 12 kills, with 11 digs and four blocks while hitting .310 across her 29 attacks. Donaphon complimented her first-year teammate with her career best, 16 digs, helping NU defend the 58-39 advantage in the category.
Â
Nailah Jenkins again dominated the middle for the Huskies, landing nine kills on 12 attacks (hit .667) in addition to matching her season blocks high (eight) for the third time.
Samantha Shupe accounted for 32 assists, three kills and six digs, often sharing second touches between
Erica Staunton's 10 kills and
Kayla Martin's 15 digs.
Â
After conceding a seven-block margin to its conference foe on Saturday, Northeastern (6-2, 3-1 CAA North) returned to its traditional form, compiling the 11-6 advantage in rejections. The Huskies made their net presence known midway through the first set as Jenkins united on consecutive blocks with Staunton first and Shupe second to shoot NU out to the 16-13 lead.
Â
Despite Northeastern later cruising to the 22-16 lead, Delaware (2-5, 1-3 CAA North) made life difficult for the Huskies down the stretch, saving four of the five set points NU had earned at 24-19.
Â
Northeastern's attack took off during the second set, where the Huskies hit .371 to flex the 17-6 edge in total kills. NU jumped out to the early, 5-0 lead and never looked back, receiving six kills apiece from Arliel and Staunton.
Â
Martin's second of two aces on Sunday helped Northeastern burst out to the 5-1 lead during the third set as the Huskies continued to pull away from the Blue Hens. NU registered six blocks during its 25-16, match-clinching victory, holding the visitors to eight kills against nine attack errors.
Â
Savannah Seemans notched seven kills, three blocks and 12 digs for Delaware while Katie Turner tracked down 14 digs.
Prior to Sunday's match, Northeastern recognized the two members of its 2021 senior class: outside hitters
Brianna Daphnis and
Katie Rolfe.
