Hofstra holds on against Huskies, 63-60

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Despite Kendall Currence's game-high, 18-point effort on Tuesday night, the Northeastern women's basketball team was unsuccessful in its bid for a fifth straight win as the Huskies were defeated by Hofstra, 63-60, at the David S. Mack Sports & Exhibition Complex.

Currence accounted for five straight NU points during the late stages of the fourth quarter as Northeastern (7-12, 6-10 CAA) attempted to unravel the hosts' 55-46 lead inside four minutes to go. After Hofstra (7-11, 5-7 CAA) had committed an errant pass with exactly one second remaining in regulation, the NU junior received the ensuing inbounds play and put up a contested 3-pointer from the right wing, misfiring on the potential game-tying basket.

Mide Oriyomi led Northeastern with 13 rebounds while registering seven points, four assists and three steals. Ayanna Dublin tracked down another 11 rebounds for the Huskies, helping NU sport the 41-39 advantage on the boards and the +5 edge on the offensive glass.

Maddie Vizza – the three-time reigning CAA Rookie of the Week – hit three 3-pointers during the first half, finishing with nine points. Collectively, the Huskies landed six perimeter shots on 26 attempts (23 percent).

Freshman forward Izzy Larsen scored seven of her season high, nine points, during the second quarter, where Northeastern navigated four tied scores to lead, 26-24, at the half. Currence and Jaylen Hines traded 3-pointers midway through the third quarter as the teams met for the seventh time – 33-33 with 4:28 left – shortly before the Pride broke out in front for the final time.

Hofstra shot 10-for-20 at the free throw line during the fourth quarter, providing Northeastern room to creep back into the game during the closing seconds.

JaKayla Brown (17 points), Jaylen Hines (16) and Jahsyni Knight (16) paced the Pride in scoring. Hines added seven rebounds, two blocks and three steals while Knight tacked on six rebounds and five assists.

With Tuesday's defeat, the Huskies can now clinch the No. 6 seed in the 2021 CAA Women's Basketball Championship with an Elon loss on Friday to College of Charleston. Else, Northeastern will be the tournament's No. 7 seed.
