BOSTON - Northeastern won its fourth Colonial Athletic Association regular-season championship, sharing the title with James Madison, and will be the No. 2 seed at the Hercules Tires CAA Men's Basketball Championship, March 6-9, inside the Atlantic Union Bank Center on the campus of JMU in Harrisonburg, Va. The Huskies are trying to become the fourth program in CAA history to make four consecutive championship game appearances.
HUSKIES AT THE CAA TOURNAMENT
Northeastern is 19-13 all-time at the CAA tournament and have won three straight quarterfinal games. The Huskies advanced to the CAA Championship Game a CAA-best five times since 2013, and are an impressive 12-5 (.706) over the last eight tournaments, including 7-2 (.778) over the last three. NU is 6-1 in its last seven quarterfinal matchups and 6-2 as the No. 2 seed (2010, '18 and '19), including winning the 2019 CAA tournament as the No. 2 seed and advancing to the Huskies' ninth NCAA tournament.
WALKER AND TELFORT GARNER CAA TOP HONORS
Sophomore Tyson Walker was named CAA Defensive Player of the Year after leading the league in steals per game (2.24) and scored a CAA-best 19.3 points per game in conference games only. Freshman Jahmyl Telfort earned CAA Sixth Man of the Year and scored 10.6 points per game off the bench for the Huskies, second among all CAA freshmen. Walker earned a spot on the All-CAA first team, while Telfort was named to the CAA All-Rookie Team.
COEN TIES JIM CALHOUN WITH 250 WINS AT NORTHEASTERN
With the 76-67 win over Towson (2/13), head coach Bill Coen matched Jim Calhoun's 250 wins (1972-86) as the all-time winningest coach in Northeastern history. Coach Coen ranks second all-time in CAA history with 171 regular season and postseason wins, just 12 shy of the record held by Miami (FL) head coach Jim Larrañaga as he won 183 games at George Mason from 1998-2011.
BEST DEFENSIVE TEAM IN THE CAA
According to KenPom.com rankings, the Huskies are the most efficient defensive team in the CAA for the fourth consecutive year. Northeastern leads the CAA with 27 defensive rebounds per game, and have a defensive efficiency of 98.4. Delaware is the next best in the CAA at 101.9 according to KenPom.com.
MARCH MADNESS
The Huskies could potentially face four teams in the CAA tournament that they did not play during the regular season. Northeastern has yet to play William & Mary, UNCW, Drexel and Delaware this year due to cancellations.
