Northeastern's Madison Mailey to compete for Team Canada at Tokyo 2020

VICTORIA, B.C. - Northeastern's Madison Mailey, alum of the women's rowing team, has been named to Team Canada to represent the largest Canadian rowing team in the past 25 years at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, announced by Rowing Canada Aviron and the Canadian Olympic Committee on Tuesday. Mailey, along with the other 28 athletes, qualified for Team Canada based on their performances at the 2019 World Rowing Championships, the Final Olympic Qualification Regatta and a series of internal assessment camps.

"I am so proud and honored to represent my country on the world stage," said Mailey. "Dreams really do come true!"

With 10 Canadian boats at the start line in Tokyo, this will be the largest Olympic rowing team since the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, when Canada also sent 10 crews. On the current Olympic program, the eight, with whom Mailey will compete with, is the only boat with a coxswain to pace and steer the boat.

"Madison has been committed to this moment since she was a member of the Canadian Junior team in high school." said Northeastern head coach Joe Wilhelm. "Through her dedication and perseverance, she consistently improved from being a collegiate athlete to U23 World Champion, and now Olympian. All the while remaining a dedicated and humble student athlete and exemplary teammate. We, at Northeastern, couldn't be happier for her."
