In the Grand Final race, Burns and the U.S. men's 8+ crew inched ahead of the field at the halfway point of the race as the top four crews were still within a second of one another. At the line, the British crew had pulled its bowball ahead, finishing with a time of 5:34.34. The U.S. crossed in at 5:34.55 taking silver, with Germany taking bronze in 5:35.58.
"Rhett, along with the U.S men's 8+, rowed an absolutely thrilling Grand Final at the Under-23 World Rowing Championships in Racice, Czech Republic." said Head Coach
Justin Jones. "This race was the talk of the regatta and had the tightest margins of the entire week of racing. Rhett was an integral leader in that crew and I am tremendously proud of the hardware he earned through his first National Team venture. This experience will help Rhett lead men's rowing at Northeastern next year as one of our returning co-captains. He has a very bright future in the sport and it was a pleasure to work with him internationally this summer."
In the Grand Final of the men's double, Cartwright andĀ Oliver CostleyĀ were in the fifth/sixth position at the 500 meter mark. Persevering, the twoĀ were able to push through in the second half of the race to finish a very creditable fourth overall for Great Britain.Ā
