BOSTON – Chris Doherty had a career-high 19 points as the Northeastern men's basketball team (6-13, 0-8) went shot for shot against one of the hottest teams in the nation, but UNCW (12-5, 6-0) used a 12-3 run midway through the second half and scored 25 points off 18 NU turnovers to edge the Huskies on Monday night at Matthews Arena, 74-68.
Â
Doherty, who added seven rebounds, finished the night 6-of-11 from the floor and 7-of-11 from the free throw line to lead four Huskies in double figures. He was joined by
Jahmyl Telfort (15 points on 6-of-10 shooting),
Shaquille Walters (13 points and four assists) and
Coleman Stucke (12 points and seven rebounds). Northeastern was 25-of-54 on the night and 31% from three (4-of-13).
Â
Jaylen Sims led the Seahawks with 18 points on 4-of-9 from the floor for a UNCW team that shot 40% overall (22-of-55) and 40% from three (8-of-20). He was joined by Mike Okauru (15 points), Jaylen Fornes (15 points) and Shykeim Phillips (13 points) in double figures.
Â
• Northeastern led by as many as 12 in the first half thanks to a 14-2 run early in the opening half for a Huskies team that shot 57% (17-of-30) and forced the Seahawks into eight turnovers.
Â
• UNCW clawed back though, and went on an 8-0 run at the under-8 timeout to trim the deficit to four points at 24-20 before a quick 6-2 run late brought the gap down to two at half, 38-36.
Â
• Doherty had 10 points in 11 minutes of action to lead the Huskies, while Fornes had 12 on 3-of-5 shooting and Okauru 10 on 3-of-6 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the line.
Â
• Neither team led by more than eight points as the teams went punch for punch in the second half, with Northeastern leading 54-51 with 10:05 to go after a Telfort jumper in the paint.
Â
• UNCW's subsequent 12-3 run, though, erased the deficit and gave the Seahawks a lead they would not relinquish as UNCW hit its free throws down the stretch, finishing 22-of-28 from the line.
Â
The Huskies and Seahawks will square off again on Thursday night in Wilmington at 7 p.m. on FloHoops.
