BOSTON – With less than three weeks until the start of the college basketball season, Northeastern junior guard
Jahmyl Telfort and redshirt senior forward
Chris Doherty collected preseason honors from the CAA at the conference's annual Media Day on Wednesday.
Â
Telfort, the team's leading scorer from last season, was named to the CAA Preseason Second Team while Doherty, one of the nation's leading rebounders in 2021-22, earned Honorable Mention accolades.
Â
Telfort, who finished 13
th in the league averaging 12.6 points per game, started in 28 of the 31 games he played a season ago, reaching double figures 21 times. The Boucherville, Quebec native eclipsed the 20-point plateau on three occasions, highlighted by a season-high 22 points at Hofstra on February 19 on a 10-of-17 afternoon from the field.
Â
Doherty (Marlborough, Mass.) finished last season with 268 rebounds (8.9 rebounds per game), good for ninth on Northeastern's single-season record list. He started all 30 games he played, averaging 11.8 points per game (17
th in the CAA), and recorded eight double-doubles on the season.Â
Â
Doherty had a day to remember in the CAA First Round against William & Mary, finishing with a career-high 26 points on a perfect 10-of-10 night from the floor. Doherty's performance marked just the second time in tournament history that a player went 10-of-10 from the field, and first since Navy's David Robinson went 12-of-12 in 1985. It was also just the second time in Northeastern history that a Husky was perfect from the floor with at least 10 field goal attempts.
Â
Northeastern, which was selected sixth in the CAA Preseason Poll, opens the season on November 7 against crosstown rival Boston University (7:30 p.m.).
Â
Season tickets to catch the Huskies in action at Matthews Arena are currently on sale for just $125 per seat. The Huskies open the home portion of the schedule on November 16 against Harvard (7 p.m.).
