Da Naia's First Career Goal Lifts Huskies to Victory on Senior Day

BROOKLINE, Mass. - For the second straight game, the Northeastern men's soccer team (5-8-3, 3-4-1 CAA) overcame a one-goal deficit with two second half goals to take down William & Mary (4-5-6, 2-3-3 CAA) by a score of 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Parsons Field.

Goals from sophomore Tobias Wangerud (3) and senior day honoree Omar Da Naia (1) came late in the contest to keep the Huskies playoff hopes alive, jumping over William & Mary in the CAA standings.
  • William & Mary got on the board first in the 12th minute, on a feed into the middle that was settled and scored.
  • The Tribe held their lead for almost the entire contest, holding Northeastern off the scoreboard until the last 10 minutes of play.
  • The Huskies got on the board in the 82nd minute to tie the game up, Tobias Wangerud notched his third goal of the season when a throw in from Morris Matthews bounced off of a William & Mary defender. Wangerud tapped the ball in on the volley to tie the game up at 1-1.
  • Northeastern attempted an all-out attack, bringing goalkeeper Colby Hegarty forward for a setpiece - the Tribe tried to counter off the turnover, but Colby and the Husky defense closed down all trouble.
  • In the final 10 seconds, it was Matthews again delivering the ball across the field with a cross - it found Ole Kjørholt, who tipped it forward to a waiting Omar Da Naia, who notched his first career goal with 2.6 seconds left on the clock to secure the victory.
  • The win puts Northeastern at 10 points in conference play, jumping over William & Mary at nine points, for sixth place. As the points stand, the Huskies hold the final playoff spot. They await the results of Monmouth and Delaware at 7 p.m. - Monmouth came into the weekend tied with Northeastern at seven points, holding the head-to-head tiebreak. A win for the Hawks in that game would bring both teams back to even, with Monmouth taking sixth on the tiebreaker.

The Huskies have one game remaining, a CAA match up at Delaware next Saturday, October 29 - that game kicks off at 4 p.m. on FloFC.
