Huskies Blank Blue Hens, Clinch CAA #4 Seed

NEWARK, Del. – Needing to clinch a playoff spot in the CAA Tournament, the Northeastern men's soccer team (6-8-3, 4-4-1 CAA) took down Delaware (4-11-2, 2-6-1) by a score of 3-0 on Saturday afternoon, clinching the #4 seed in the CAA tournament.

Multi-point games from Federico Tellez (2 assists) & Fabrizio Cubeddu (1 goal, 1 assist), and a seven-save shutout from Colby Hegarty highlighted the win for the Huskies.

  • The Huskies opened the scoring in the 10th minute, with a corner kick floating in from Federico Tellez (2). Tellez found the head of Ole Kjørholt (2) and he placed it perfectly on the opposite post, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
  • The Blue Hens had an opportunity to level the score in the 26th minute on a penalty kick after a foul in the Northeastern box. Goalkeeper Colby Hegarty was able to stop the attempt and keep the game 1-0.
  • Northeastern tacked on another goal in the 32nd minute when a free kick from Tellez (3) curled into the box to the left post. Fabrizio Cubeddu (1) went up and crossed the ball to the right side with a header, finding Jacob Marin-Thomson (2) for the score.
  • Cubeddu opened the scoring in the second half with his first career goal – he awaited a lofted ball from Andres Torrealba (1) in the box, and fired a volley off a bounce to make it 3-0.
  • The Blue Hens went down to 10 men in the 77th minute due to a straight red card.
  • Colby Hegarty finished the game with a season-high seven saves in his second shutout of the season.
  • The Huskies clinched a playoff spot with the victory, securing the #4 seed in the CAA tournament. Northeastern will face the #5 seed, Drexel, on Thursday, November 3rd. The neutral-site game will take place at the #1 seed, which will be the winner of tonight's matchup between Elon and UNCW in Wilmington, N.C.
