Charlie "qghop" Schatmeyer is a third year studying mechanical engineering. Aside from being an active student, they are also a Flex player for Northeastern's Varsity Overwatch team and have taken the time to answer a few questions about esports and themselves in general.
Q. What's your standard day like as a Northeastern Student and Varsity Player?
A. A typical busy day for me starts with my classes, where I'll be attending lectures or getting work done in Snell until around 4, finding time for a quick bite to eat in-between. Afterwards I'll head home or to the campus's esports room to play Overwatch. Depending on the day, the team might have 1 or 2 games, a vod review session, a 2 hour-long scrimmage, or a combination of the three. Either way, I'll try to get in a few hours of practice before eating dinner and calling it a day.
Q. Other than esports, what are some things you enjoy doing?
A. Outside of gaming I enjoy spending my time rock climbing, practicing photography, or working on personal engineering and game-development projects
Q. How did you get into esports, either at a college level or even before that?
A. I've always been a fan of taking video games too seriously, but I never really considered myself a competitor, only a fan. When I got to Northeastern, I joined the school's Overwatch Club B team and got instantly hooked to competing in a team environment, and spent my entire first semester here grinding the game. Through a stroke of luck, I was able to prove myself on the Varsity team, and the rest is history.
Q. What keeps you motivated to keep playing Overwatch, especially at a competitive level?
A. I'm always motivated to keep grinding Overwatch because I know my teammates are counting on me. I also might be addicted to this game.
Q. Have you ever considered switching games? If so, what would you switch to.
A. I'm a big fan of Splatoon, so if I had to switch games I'd go there first.
Q. What are some of your favorite moments on your team or with your teammates?
A. I have too many good memories to choose from. Listing off a quick 3: Landing a 3k pulse bomb on my first day trialing with Varsity, Reverse-Sweeping the ESC Championships against Miami, and the team's yearly karaoke nights
Q. Do you plan on continuing esports after college?
A. I don't yet see esports as a real career path for me outside of college, but I'll definitely find some way to keep playing my favorite games competitively with people.
Q. What's a change you'd like to see in Overwatch or esports in general?
A. I just hope for there to be more investment into the Overwatch scene. I'm very much not doing this for the money, but I mean I'd love to win more than I do, and I'd be great to see my peers who've dedicated their lives to getting better at Overwatch have a greater chance at making it a stable career.
