NU Esports’ Overwatch Team Takes Second at Kentucky LAN

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Northeastern University Overwatch team took second place at the University of Kentucky Esports Bluegrass Showdown on Sunday, losing in the grand finals against Bellevue University.
 
Northeastern had a dominant showing on-site after qualifying for the event as the three seed by taking down the No. 18 UTD Comets in round 6 of the online Swiss stage.
 
14 teams came to the University of Kentucky Federal Credit Union Esports Lounge to compete across the weekend including Ohio State, Georgia Tech and Texas A&M
 
In the first round of LAN play against the University of Kentucky, the Huskies didn't give up a single round to the hosting Wildcats. After a difficult first map loss to Michigan State in the second round, the Huskies rallied back to win the series 2-1 punching their ticket to the top 6 and championship Sunday.
 
The Huskies continued their undefeated series streak with a 2-0 win against No. 16 Bellevue University. The Bruins fell after fighting back to force overtime in game 2. Charlie "qghop" Schatmeyer secured several key fights with his well-timed supportive utility.
 
The Buccaneers were unable to stop the Huskies who again went 2-0 to secure their spot in grand finals after Carter "Hedwig" Williams continued to hold difficult angles of attack from No. 20 Blinn College.
 
In the Grand finals was a rematch of Northeastern vs. Bellevue after the Bruins took a clean sweep against the Blinn Buccaneers. Grand finals were a best of five match, after three very close games Bellevue managed to hold on in the final map to secure a 3-0 sweep against Northeastern.
 
The Huskies took second place which is their best showing in the Bluegrass showdown series.
 
Northeastern Overwatch looks ahead to ESC conference playoffs which will take place April 25-26th at Ball State. The Huskies look to get their second ESC conference championship with their first being in 2022 and losing in semifinals in 2023.
