LONDON – Tied at 67 with 2.6 seconds left in overtime, a Chase Cormier lob to
Joe Pridgen for a backdoor alley oop sent the Northeastern men's basketball team (1-4) into the championship game of the London Basketball Classic with a 69-67 victory over Manhattan (1-3) in a thrilling contest on Thursday at the Copper Box Arena.
Â
Prior to the overtime, Cormier was awarded three free throws after being fouled with 0.5 seconds remaining in regulation and the Jaspers leading 56-55. After Cormier missed the first and hit the second to tie the game, Northeastern was called for an illegal substitution, a technical foul that sent Manhattan to the line for one shot.Â
Â
Ant Nelson would hit the free throw to put the Jaspers back up 57-56, but Cormier was steady at the line for his final shot, draining it to force extra time and setting the stage for the overtime heroics.
Â
Pridgen had 20 points on the night on 9-of-15 from the floor to lead three Huskies in double figures. He was joined by
Coleman Stucke (19 points), who was 4-of-9 from deep on the evening, and
Jahmyl Telfort (12 points on 4-of-7 overall and 3-of-3 from deep).Â
Â
The Huskies shot 41% on the night (28-of-68) and 9-of-25 from long range while outrebounding the Jaspers 48-37, the most rebounds in a game for Northeastern since 2011, led by a career-high 11 from
Alexander Nwagha.
Â
Manhattan, meanwhile, received 19 points apiece from Josh Roberts and Marques Watson on a 28-of-68 night from the floor in a game that saw eight ties and nine lead changes.
• Northeastern, which shot 35% (13-of-37), led for much of the opening half thanks to scoring distribution up and down the roster. Telfort and Nwagha led the way with six points apiece for a Huskies team that led by as many as eight points during the first 20 minutes.
Â
• Manhattan used a 7-0 run to trim the deficit to one with 6:11 until the break, and the teams went punch for punch from there before heading into the locker room level at 29. The Jaspers shot 38% overall and 1-of-7 from three, with Roberts leading the way with eight points.
Â
• After the Huskies opened the second half with a quick 5-0 run, highlighted by a deep three from Stucke, Manhattan responded with a 9-2 run of its own to take its first lead since early in the second half, 38-36.
Â
• Northeastern answered fast, though, going on a 13-4 run including three straight threes from Stucke and Pridgen to retake the lead at the Under-8, 49-42, before the Jaspers clawed back to setup the wild finish.
The Huskies will take on Princeton in the championship game of the London Basketball Classic on Saturday at 12pm (ET).
