Terriers Nip Huskies On Opening Night, 72-63

BOSTON – Tied at 53 with 8:45 to play, Boston University (1-0) closed the game on a 19-10 run to collect its first win over the Northeastern men's basketball team (0-1) since 2018 on Opening Night at Case Gym, 72-63.

BU's Walter Whyte (27 points, 13 rebounds) and the Huskies' Jahmyl Telfort (26 points, tied for a career high nine rebounds) put on a show all night long, while Masai Troutman added 13 points off the bench in his first collegiate action.

Northeastern finished the night 18-of-49 from the floor and 7-of-23 from deep with five Huskies (Troutman, Chase Cormier, Rashad King, Collin Metcalf, Harold Woods) making their collegiate debuts.

BU, meanwhile, was 24-of-62 on the night and held the slight edge in rebounding, 40-37.

• Both teams got to know each other in the early going, with BU holding an 8-6 lead at the first media timeout before using a 14-4 run to open up a 12-point lead eight minutes into the game, highlighted by back-to-back threes from Whyte.

• Northeastern, which shot 42% in the first half, kept battling as the half wore on, erasing the deficit and taking their first lead of the night with 5:22 to go in the half. Telfort finished the half with a team-high 12 points and seven rebounds.

• The teams would go back and forth from there as the Terriers, who shot 34% in the opening half, closed on a 7-0 run to take a five-point lead into recess, 37-32.

• After seeing BU extend the lead to nine out of the break, the Huskies went on a quick 8-2 run highlighted by a strong and-one from Telfort to make it 43-40 Terriers with 14:35 to go.

• NU again brought the game back to even thanks to a three from Glen McClintock (eight points, five rebounds, four steals), with 8:45 to go, but that's as close as the Huskies would get as Boston Univ. closed the game on a 19-10 run.

The Huskies will head to Providence on Saturday for an 8 p.m. matchup with the Friars, a Sweet 16 team a season ago, on FS2.
