Colangelo, Huskies Claim Overtime Win, 4-3, Against LIU

EAST MEADOW — Carried by two goals, including an overtime game winner, by Sam Colangelo, the Northeastern Men's Hockey team defeated the LIU Sharks, 4-3, on Sunday night in New York.

"There is nobody that is satisfied with first half of our season, but now we've got to find a way to fix it," said Fernie Flaman head coach Jerry Keefe. "We've got a good Hockey team in our locker room, so the message right now is to go home, reset, spend time with family and come back ready for a new second half."

  • The Huskies top line opened up scoring midway through the first frame. Cam Lund led the rush up ice for a give-and-go with Justin Hryckowian and Aidan McDonough. After his first attempt, McDonough collected and buried his rebound for a 1-0 advantage.
  • With an early power play in the second period, Sam Colangelo cleaned up a deflection on the backside to put Northeastern ahead by a pair. Hryckowian, his second of the night, and Gunnarwolfe Fontaine were credited the assists.
  • No less than 37 seconds later, Jack Hughes was in the right place at the right time to sink one from in front of the crease off feeds from the freshman defensive duo Hunter McDonald and Jackson Dorrington.
  • The Sharks brought a battle to the ice, scoring three unanswered goals and sending the game into overtime.
  • It did not take long for the Huskies to secure the victory as Colangelo, with a steal in the defensive end, scored the game winner for his second goal of the night on a breakaway.
  • In his eighth win of the season, netminder Devon Levi finished the night with 33 saves, while McDonald led the Huskies with four blocks.

The Huskies will come back from the holiday break in preparation for a two-game weekend. First up is a road trip to Bentley for a Friday night (Dec. 30) matchup, before heading to Cambridge for a New Year's Day contest with Harvard.
