Big Third Quarter Run Pushes Huskies Past Stonehill, 75-64, in Non-Conference Finale

BOX SCORE (PDF)

NORTH EASTON, Mass. – The Northeastern women's basketball team (5-6) closed the third quarter on a 16-4 run to pull away from host Stonehill (3-9) en route to a 75-64 win on Tuesday night.

Sophomore forward Asha Parker and junior forward Izzy Larsen each had career-highs in the win, as they tallied 14 points and 11 points, respectively.

Junior guard Derin Erdogan and sophomore guard Gemima Motema each scored 10, while senior guard Jaelyn Batts dished out a game-best five assists in her Huskies debut.

Northeastern used an astounding 56-22 advantage in the paint to overcome hot three-point shooting from the Skyhawks.
  • The Huskies got off to an early 4-3 lead after back-to-back layups from Parker.
  • Stonehill, however, would respond with a 7-0 run to take a 10-4 lead at the 6:48 mark.
  • Three straight layups, highlighted by a steal and finish by Batts, tied the game up at 10 just 80 seconds later.
  • Back and forth play continued for the rest of the quarter, but Stonehill used long range offense going 4-of-9 from three to take a 21-18 lead into the second.
  • The teams continued to go punch for punch in the second quarter, and Erdogan put the Huskies up briefly (27-26) with a layup at the 6:01 mark, but Stonehill responded right back and eventually went up by five.
  • The Huskies got hot in the final two minutes of the frame, scoring the final six points, highlighted by a layup from graduate student forward JaMiya Braxton in the final 15 seconds to take a 36-35 lead into halftime.
  • Back-and-forth play continued in the third with each time trading baskets throughout.
  • Parker knotted the contest up at 42 at the 7:47 mark, but Stonehill immediately retook the lead, 44-42.
  • Parker would again hit a shot to tie the game at 44 to start Northeastern's key 16-4 run.
  • She then got a steal and fed Batts for a fastbreak layup to give the Huskies back the lead for good at 46-44.
  • A Motema steal and layup pushed the lead to 48-44, but the hosts would quickly cut it back to two.
  • The Huskies then scored the next eight points and would eventually take a 58-48 lead into the final ten minutes.
  • The scoring outburst continued for the Huskies in the fourth, as they kicked off the frame with back-to-back layups by freshman forward Oralye Kiefer and Erdogan to extend the lead to a game-high 14 points.
  • Stonehill used a 10-2 run to cut the Northeastern lead to 66-61 with 3:55 to go, but Motema would get a steal and layup to push the lead back to seven, to start a crucial 9-0 run that would put the game away.
  • The defense was stifling down the stretch as they did not allow a made field goal from the 3:55 mark until there were just two seconds left and the outcome was already decided.
The Huskies now have 10 days off before they open CAA play at Monmouth on December 30th at 3 p.m. The team then has a quick turnaround as they host William & Mary at the Cabot Center two days later for a New Year's Day matinee at 2 p.m.
