CARY, N.C. – Wrapping up its weekend at the Penn State Tournament, the Northeastern baseball team (2-2) took down host Penn State (1-3) by a score of 8-1 on Sunday morning at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina.
Â
After splitting a doubleheader with Monmouth Saturday, and falling to LIU in the opener Friday, the Huskies end their first weekend of play at an even .500 record.
Â
- Wyatt Scotti (1-0) got the start for Northeastern on the mound; after finding himself in bases-loaded jams twice in the early innings, he got himself out both times. He went 6.0 innings allowing just one run, and striking out two.
- Northeastern opened the scoring in the top of the sixth; after finding himself on third, JP Olson charged home plate on a passed ball from PSU. Then freshman Mike Sirota was able to make contact and hit a deep double, scoring Max Viera.
- PSU responded in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run to lead off the inning.
- The Huskies tacked on another run in the eighth as Jeff Costello stole second base after reaching on a single. He was then hit home by Viera, giving Northeastern a 3-1 lead.
- The floodgates were opened in the top of the ninth as Northeastern tallied five runs on five hits; RBIs were notched by Mark Darakjy (1), Spenser Smith with a triple (2), and Jeff Costello (1). Costello then scored when Corey DiLoreto put the ball in play and reached first on a fielding error.
- Northeastern stole a total of four bases on the day; all four steals eventually crossed the plates as runs.
- Rookie reliever Dennis Colleran took over in the seventh for his first collegiate appearance; he finished out the game allowing no hits, striking out five, and walking only two in his 3.0 innings of work, earning the save.
- Leading the way offensively was Sirota who went 4-for-5 at the plate with an RBI.
- Smith's triple was the Huskies' second of the weekend.
- This is the fourth time in the last five seasons the Huskies have started the season 2-2 through its first four games.
Â
The Huskies resume play next Friday, February 25 when they face off with Minnesota in Fort Myers, Florida. They then travel up to Port Charlotte for the 2022 Snowbird Classic, facing a double header with Marshall on Saturday, and a single game with Merrimack on Sunday.
