FORT MYERS, Fla. - Northeastern University baseball (2-3, 0-0 CAA) fell to the University of Minnesota (2-4, 0-0 Big Ten) on Friday afternoon at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers, Florida. The one-off game was a replacement of MLB spring training games for both schools who were slated to play their local MLB counterparts, the Red Sox and the Twins.
A low-scoring affair saw both starting pitchers work well into the sixth inning and beyond, with only four different pitchers seeing action in the game.
- Mike Sirota was hit by pitch in the top of the first inning where he would then proceed to steal second, his first collegiate steal.
- Cam Schlittler struck out two batters swinging in the bottom of the first to push him over 100 career strikeouts.
- Minnesota's Hauser singled to left field to send Wilhite home giving the Gophers a 1-0 lead.
- Spenser Smith led off for the Huskies in the third inning with a single to left field where he would then steal second, his second SB of the season.
- Minnesota would post another run in the fourth inning to extend their lead 2-0.
- The Huskies looked to break the shutout in the fifth inning, but runner's interference was called on Max Viera, sending the runner back to second wiping away a run, keeping the score 2-0.
- Owen Langan would step on the mound for the Huskies pitching 2.0 innings and striking out one batter.
- Luke Beckstein singled to right field in the top of the 8th sending home Sirota to cut the Huskies deficit to one.Â
- Minnesota would double down the right field line in the bottom of that same inning, sending home another insurance run taking a 3-1 lead.
- Schlittler earned the loss despite going 6.0 innings allowing just four hits, and two unearned runs while striking out four. His record on the season is now 0-2.
