BOX SCORE (PDF)

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.
- The Northeastern baseball team (3-5) bounced back with another Sunday victory, taking down fellow Massachusetts school Merrimack College (2-2) by a score of 11-1 at Centennial Park in the 2022 Snowbird Classic.

What started as a pitchers duel early broke open for the Huskies in the middle of the game as they notched three runs in the 4th inning and eight more in the 7th, with five runs coming from bases-loaded situations.
  • Jeff Costello got things started early, as he reached base on a passed-ball strike three, and proceeded to steal second and third, but the Huskies could not bring him home.
  • The Huskies would not see much more offense until the fourth - it all started with Corey DiLoreto hitting a one-out single to center field, just the second hit of the game for NU.
  • After Max Viera advanced on a hit-by-pitch and Mark Darakjy drew a walk, freshman Jack Doyle singled through the left side with the bases loaded to send home DiLoreto.
  • The next at-bat, Gregory Bozzo was also hit by a pitch, sending home Viera from third.
  • Sophomore transfer Luke Beckstein hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Darakjy, to finish the scoring in the fourth; a 3-0 lead for the Huskies.
  • Merrimack would answer back in the bottom of the 6th with a ground-out to third base, which sent a runner home from third.
  • The Huskies headed to the top of the 7th with a two-run lead, but added eight insurance runs to put the game away.
  • With runners at the corners, DiLoreto stepped up and singled up the middle, sending home Justin Bosland from third base, and the runner at first Mike Sirota advanced all the way to third.
  • Viera drew a walk and the wild pitch allowed Sirota to score from third, making the score 5-1.
  • After the bases were loaded on a double steal from Viera and DiLoreto, and another hit-by-pitch draw from Darakjy, Doyle drew a walk to send DiLoreto home for the 6-1 lead.
  • Bozzo then hit an infield single, advancing all runners and scoring Viera.
  • Beckstein, who hit a sac-fly earlier in the game, stepped up to the plate and cleared the bases with a grand slam. It was his first career homer in NCAA play and extended the lead to 11-1.
  • Starting pitcher Wyatt Scotti (2-0) pitched nearly a complete game with 6.1 innings of work, allowing just three hits, one unearned run, and retired eight by way of strikeout.
  • His eighth strikeout led off the bottom of the 7th. He was then replaced by Thomas Balboni, who then followed suit and retired the last two batters of the game via strikeout.
The Huskies have completed their winter tournament circuit and will next travel to Raleigh, North Carolina this coming weekend for a three-game series at NC State. The Huskies face the Wolfpack at 3pm on Friday, March 4, 2pm on Saturday, and 1pm on Sunday.
