Schlittler, Opportunistic Huskies Defeat #1-Seed Charleston, 6-5

BOX SCORE (PDF)

ELON, N.C. – In their second game of the 2022 CAA Baseball Tournament, the #5 Northeastern Huskies (30-27-1) outlasted #1 College of Charleston (36-18) by a score of 6-5 on Thursday afternoon at Latham Park.

The opportunistic Huskies offense tallied runs in five innings and the pitching staff led by Cam Schlittler (W, 5-8) held the Cougars to just two runs through seven innings.

  • Schlittler was the second straight Northeastern starter to work a seven-inning outing, allowing just two runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out nine batters in the contest, getting five of the first six outs via strikeout.
  • The Huskies came out blazing in the second inning, posting two runs on two hits – it all started with a Danny Crossen lead-off single to center field, and a Justin Bosland free pass as he held off on the full count.
  • After a sacrifice bunt by Luke Beckstein to advance both into scoring position, Luke Masiuk hammered a ball into center field for two RBI as the Huskies took the early 2-0 lead.
  • The Cougars answered back in the third with an RBI single and RBI ground out with the bases loaded to tie the game at 2-2.
  • Northeastern notched a run in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings: in the fourth, walks were drawn by Bosland, Beckstein, and Spenser Smith to load the bases, and Jeff Costello drew the fourth walk to notch an RBI and give the Huskies the lead at 3-2.
  • In the fifth JP Olson reached on an error and made it to second on the ground out. With two outs, Olson rounded third base on the infield hit by Beckstein, and when the throw to first was off, Beckstein avoided the tag and Olson trotted home for the 4-2 lead.
  • Spenser Smith led off the sixth inning with a single, then made it all the way to third on a steal and a wild pitch – the next batter, Jeff Costello, hit a no-out RBI sac-fly to bring Smith home quickly, making the score 5-2.
  • Northeastern extended its lead in the eighth when an infield single by JP Olson scored Spenser Smith from third to make it 6-2. Smith was advanced to third from first on a fake-bunt by Jeff Costello that he sent into the gap at short stop for the single.
  • Charleston cut the lead to two in the eighth with a two-run shot to left field, and to one in the ninth on an RBI ground out. Allard closed out the game with his second consecutive save.
  • The Husky bullpen sent out Owen Langan and Jordy Allard (S, 2) for the second straight game to close out the game. Langan worked the eighth allowing two runs on two hits with one strikeout, and Allard worked the ninth retiring the Cougars before they could tally the game-tying run. He earned his second save as a Husky in as many appearances, allowing one run on two hits.
  • Northeastern is now 2-2 all-time in the CAA Tournament facing the one seed – they improve their record as a five seed to 8-8.
The Huskies move on to the next round of the winners bracket, slated for a 7pm start on Friday, May 27. They will face the three seed, Hofstra University, who defeated the 2-seed, UNCW, in extra innings (4-3).
