Erica Staunton tallied a team-high nine kills, but it was not enough as the Northeastern volleyball team (0-2) fell to Northwestern in straight sets on Saturday afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
- Set 1: After kills from senior middle blocker Nailah Jenkins and Staunton knotted the score up at two, Northwestern pulled ahead with three straight points. The Huskies fought back though with three kills from Staunton and an ace by freshman setter Jessica Frannea to help tie up the set again at seven. Propelled by a 4-0 run midway through the set, Northwestern led 15-9, and hit a blistering .667, ultimately taking the set 25-13.
- Set 2: Both teams traded points early in the set, with neither leading by more than two points. Northwestern stretched its lead 16-10 after three straight kills and didn't look back. A Staunton kill trimmed the hosts' lead to 18-14, but Northwestern surged ahead and took the set, 25-16.
- Set 3: The hosts stormed out to an early 10-6 lead, and remained in front for the entirety of the set. Kills from Jenkins and graduate student outside hitter Laura Seeger highlighted a late comeback by the Huskies, cutting the deficit to 20-17, but Northwestern closed out the set with a 25-19 win.
- Frannea had a team-high 21Â assists.
- Jenkins chipped in with seven kills and two blocks.
- Northwestern outhit the Huskies, .500Â to .213.
The Huskies will return to the court in the Duke Tournament on Friday, September 2 through Saturday, September 3.
