BOSTON – Two medal finishes highlighted stellar all-around performances as four members of the Northeastern men's rowing team were selected to represent their countries at the 2022 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Varese, Italy on July 25-30.

Racing against a strong field, rising senior Alexander Abuhoff collected silver in the US men's 8+, and rising senior Will Dempsey won silver in the US men's 4+. Rising junior Victor El Kholti (French 8+) and rising senior James Cartwright (Great Britain 4x) also finished the week strong, winning their respective petite finals.

"It was such a pleasure and an amazing experience to be able to represent the US and Northeastern at the World Rowing Championships a few weeks ago," said Abuhoff. "Seeing NU rowers there representing their respective countries shows the robustness and legitimacy of the program at Northeastern, and the excitement for the future as many potential recruits were competing in the Junior events. I think I speak for Will, Victor, and James as well when I say we are all incredibly excited to get back to Boston in September, and take what we have learned over the summer back to our program to help elevate the team to meet our goals for both the fall and spring seasons."

In the men's 8+ grand final, Abuhoff and the US crew got off to a solid start, keeping pace with Great Britain and Australia in third. The three crews continued to battle throughout the race, with the US ultimately pulling ahead of Australia, finishing a little over two seconds behind Great Britain with a time of 5:53.97.

"It was pretty surreal being able to represent the United States at the worlds stage," said Dempsey. "Although we didn't get to hear the national anthem on the medals dock, I was still very proud to medal, and it was an experience that I'll remember for the rest of my life. On top of that, I got to go through it all with my teammate at Northeastern Alex Abuhoff which made it even more special. I am really looking forward to what we can do as a team this fall and spring and can't wait to see more Northeastern guys represent their countries in the future."

Coxing the US men's 4+ in the grand final, Dempsey had the boat off to a solid start. The field began to separate in the middle portion of the race, and the rising senior's tactical decision making played a key role down the stretch. In the last 400 meters, Dempsey had the boat make a strong move, and got by Italy to take silver with a time of 6:06.13.

After finishing fourth in the AB semifinal with strong competition, Cartwright and the Great Britain quad bounced back with a gutsy petite final win, crossing the line at 5:54.60, clipping second-place Poland, who finished with a time of 5:54.97.

El Kholti, and the French 8+ won their respective petite final, crossing the line ahead of the Czech Republic with a time of 5:54.60.

"I am happy with the experience I got from it," said El Kholti. "I am [also] excited to be back at Northeastern to share it with my teammates!"
