Marin-Thomson's 90th Minute Goal Lifts Huskies over Crimson

BROOKLINE, Mass. – Northeastern men's soccer (2-1-3) won a last-minute thriller against cross-town rival Harvard (2-2-0) by a score of 3-2 on Tuesday evening at Parsons Field.

With a tie game in the final 10 minutes of play, a heroic 90th minute goal from graduate student Jacob Marin-Thomson gave the Huskies their first home victory of the season with just 30 seconds left in the game.

  • The Huskies were awarded a penalty kick in the second minute due to a Harvard hand-ball inside the box. Ryan Massoud (2) stepped to the spot and fired a shot into the bottom right corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.
  • Harvard got a goal back just minutes later as a shot from outside the 18 snuck into the bottom left corner for the 1-1 tie.
  • Harvard took its first lead of the evening in the 19th minute on a similar goal to their first, making it 2-1.
  • The Huskies were able to tie the game back up in the 79th minute when Ahriá Simons (1) took a free kick from mid field – his service was a low line drive that bounced through the defense and past the goalie for his first collegiate goal, tying the game at 2-2.
  • With one last effort, the Huskies pushed the ball upfield in the final minute – Ryan Massoud sent a ball towards the box that was tapped on by Fraser Brown to find Jacob Marin-Thomson. He took a touch and dribbled to his right and fired a shot that curled into the crossbar and bounced into the net for the game-winner with just 30 seconds remaining on the clock. It was his first goal of the season in just his second appearance.
  • It's the third straight game where the Huskies have tallied a goal in the 82nd minute or later – the previous two tied the game (2-2 vs. Quinnipiac, 1-1 vs Drexel).
  • The Huskies withstood 14 Harvard corner kicks, earning just one of their own.
  • Goalkeeper Colby Hegarty finished the contest with six saves.
  • Northeastern remains unbeaten at home with a 1-0-3 record at Parsons this season.

The Huskies resume conference play this Saturday, September 17 when Northeastern travels to RV Hofstra for a 7 pm kickoff on FloFC.
