NEWARK – Trailing by as many as 14 in the first half, the Northeastern men's basketball team (3-5) cut it to as little as four points early in the second half, but could not overcome a Seton Hall (5-2) team that shot 59% overall as the Pirates topped the Huskies on Wednesday night at the Prudential Center, 88-75.
Â
Jared Turner led the visitors with 18 points on a 5-of-9 night from three to lead five Huskies in double figures, but Seton Hall's Al-Amir Dawes (25 points) and Kadary Richmond (21 points) were the difference, combining to go 17-of-30 overall along with 11 rebounds and 11 assists. The Pirates finished 32-of-54 overall and went 16-of-19 from the stripe.
Â
Luka Sakota (11 points),
Harold Woods (11 points, eight rebounds),
Chris Doherty (10 points, seven rebounds) and
Rashad King (10 points, three assists) joined Turner in double figures as the Huskies shot 52% in the second half to finish 27-of-60 from the floor on the night.
Â
Northeastern overcame a slow start to the night shooting the ball to trim what was at one point a 14-point deficit down to seven at the break, 36-29, hitting four of their final eight shots from the floor to finish the half 11-of-29 overall and 1-of-12 from long range.
Â
Sakota and Doherty got it going late, combining to score the final nine Northeastern points of the half, including back-to-back buckets in the paint from Doherty, who had a team-high seven points and six boards in the opening half.
Â
Seton Hall, meanwhile, was 14-of-30 overall and scored 20 of its 36 first half points in the paint. Dawes led the way with nine points on 4-of-7 from the floor as the Pirates went 9-of-11 over an eight-minute stretch before the Huskies clamped down late, forcing Seton Hall to finish 1-of-7 over the final two minutes before recess.
Â
After a three from
Masai Troutman (five points, three assists) to cut the Pirate lead to four early in the second half, Seton Hall responded with a 12-2 run over less than three minutes to take its largest lead of the night with 13:49 left, 58-43.
Â
The Huskies wouldn't go away, though, shooting 52% over the final 20 minutes to get it down to seven with 7:05 to play, thanks in part to back-to-back threes from Turner, but the Pirates would hit six of its final nine shots to ice it in the final minutes.
Â
Northeastern will return home for the first time in nearly one month when the Huskies host Old Dominion on Saturday at 2 p.m. from Matthews Arena (NESN+ and FloHoops).
