Chris Doherty put up a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds as the Northeastern Huskies men's basketball team (1-0, 0-0 CAA) took down the Boston University Terriers (0-1, 0-0 Patriot) 67-58 on opening night at Matthews Arena.
Historic Matthews Arena was the place to be Monday night, as 2,336 fans showed for the beginning of the 104
th season of Northeastern basketball, the largest crowd at home since December 19, 2015, when the Huskies hosted No. 1 Michigan State.
The Huskies outscored the Terriers 24-14 over the final 11:58 as senior guard
Glen McClintock iced the game with four made free throws in the last minute. The Terriers took a three-point lead into the half after shooting 6-of-16 from three-point range in the first frame and getting scoring from 10 different players. Northeastern's first-half effort was led by Sakota, who had 12 points in his first half as a Husky.
Doherty's double-double was the 13
th of his career. The Marlborough native did most of his work in the second half, scoring 11 of his 15 points after the break.
- With the win, Northeastern is now 52-52 all-time in season openers and take the lead in the series with the Terriers, 76-75. The Huskies avenged their season-opening loss to the Huskies from a season ago with tonight's win.
- Redshirt senior guard Joe Pridgen was the third Husky to reach double digits in scoring, finishing the night with 10 points and eight rebounds.
- The Huskies shot 23-of-53 as a team and 6-of-19 from three, with Sakota and sophomore Jared Turner each knocking down two triples to lead the Huskies.
- Northeastern stayed out of foul trouble with just eight team fouls all game, allowing just six free throws from the Terriers.
