BOSTON — Graduate student
Chris Doherty scored 21 points and sophomore
Masai Troutman added 15 more, but the Northeastern men's basketball team (4-6) fell behind late in a 73-71 loss to Vermont (8-2) Wednesday night at Matthews Arena.
The Huskies held a nine-point lead with 9:53 to play but couldn't hold onto it as the Catamounts used a hot shooting night to overcome deficits of 13 and nine, knocking down 15 of their 29 three-point attempts.
Doherty's 21 points came on 9-of-13 shooting, giving him his second 20-point game this season and a season high in field goals made. Troutman added six rebounds and three assists onto his 15 points, leading the Huskies in the helpers category and tying with sophomore
Harold Woods on the boards.
Both teams shot above 50% from the field in the first half, but the key difference was where the teams scored from. Northeastern put up 28 points in the paint compared to the Catamounts' 10, but Vermont went 9-of-16 from beyond the arc and the Huskies lead was just 43-40.
The Huskies had built a lead as large as 13, but Vermont went on a 10-0 run to cut it to just a three-point difference with
Doherty was efficient in the first 20 minutes, going 5-for-6 and scoring 11 points in his 15 minutes of play during the first frame. Troutman led in rebounds with five and assists with two while scoring nine points of his own in that span.
Coming out of the break, the teams continued to go back-and-forth as a Vermont three made it 54-53 Northeastern with 13:52 to play, but then the Huskies went on an 8-0 run to build that nine-point lead.
NU just couldn't get the bounces on the rim down the stretch, with multiple shots going in and out as they made just four field goals in the final 10 minutes. The Catamounts took the lead with 1:09 to play for just the second time and held onto it.
