WASHINGTON, D.C. – Jahmyl Telfort had a team-high 20 points, helping No. 11 Northeastern (10-20) erase a 12-point second half deficit, including three clutch free throws in the final seconds of regulation to force overtime, before No. 6 Delaware (17-15) edged the Huskies in the Second Round of the Jersey Mike's CAA Men's Basketball Championship on Saturday night at the Entertainment and Sports Arena, 77-74.
Â
A
Chase Cormier three made it a one-point game with 8:32 to play, and it remained a one-possession game the rest of the way. After being fouled on a three with four seconds to play in regulation and Northeastern down three, Telfort went to the line with an opportunity to level the game at 72. The All-CAA selection drained each attempt to force extra time.
Â
Neither squad could gain much of an upper hand in the overtime, with the teams combining for just seven points with Jameer Nelson Jr. scoring all four UD points to give the Blue Hens a three-point lead. Telfort had another chance to force a second overtime at the buzzer, but his three-point attempt rattled out to allow Delaware to escape.Â
Â
Like he was all year long, Telfort was the difference maker for Northeastern, scoring 16 of his points in the second half to reach the 20-point plateau for the 11th time this season. He added five rebounds, three assists and three blocks, and was one of three Huskies in double-figures, joined by
Masai Troutman (12 points) and
Chris Doherty (10 points, five rebounds).Â
Â
As a team the Huskies shot 46% overall (26-of-56) and 20-of-23 from the stripe, but the Blue Hens would hold NU to a 2-of-17 night from long range.
Â
Nelson Jr. (28 points) and Jyare Davis (21 points, 14 rebounds) were the story for Delaware, which was 23-of-63 from the field and 7-of-19 from deep.
Â
• Neither squad led by more than five points in a first half that saw four ties and 11 lead changes before the Blue Hens took a one-point lead into the break, 38-37. The Huskies shot 55% overall and scored 30 of their 37 points in the paint, led by eight points from Doherty.
Â
• Nelson Jr. got it done for Delaware, dropping 15 in the half on 5-of-8 overall for a Blue Hen team that was 14-of-30 overall and 6-of-11 from deep.
Â
• UD came out of the break hot, using a 13-2 over two minutes to take a 12-point lead at the Under-16, 53-41, with six of those points coming from Nelson Jr.
Â
• Northeastern wouldn't go away, though, as Telfort went to work with seven straight points before back-to-back buckets brought the Huskies back within a possession with 8:53 left, 59-56, setting up the exciting finish.
