STONY BROOK, N.Y. – In the rubber match of their weekend series, the Northeastern Huskies (28-7, 10-5 CAA) took game three from the Stony Brook Seawolves (13-20, 5-10 CAA), winning the series with a 5-0 victory at Joe Nathan Field on Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Huskies nearly got complete-game shutouts in consecutive weekends, with
Eric Yost (W, 3-0) recording all but two outs of the game, finishing his day in the ninth inning. He was supported by an early home run from
Alex Lane (2-for-4, 2 RBI) to give the Huskies a second-inning lead, and the rest of the lineup followed up to add runs in the third, sixth, and ninth innings. Catcher
Gregory Bozzo (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) drove in the final run of the game in the top of the ninth.
Â
- The Huskies got on the scoreboard first in the second inning with a leadoff solo home run by Alex Lane.
- Northeastern tacked on another in the third when Gregory Bozzo hit a leadoff double and was brought in by a sac-bunt by Luke Beckstein and an RBI groundout by Mike Sirota.
- In the sixth, the Huskies brought in two more on two hits and a sac-fly. Mike Sirota led off the inning with a walk, and advanced to third on a hit-and-run single to center by Danny Crossen.
- With two in scoring position, Tyler MacGregor hit a sac-fly to left to score Sirota, and Alex Lane hit an RBI single to right to score Crossen.
- The four runs were enough run support for the Husky starter Eric Yost, who kept Stony Brook off the scoreboard in his 8.1 innings of work. He had six hits on his final scoreline, with no walks and six punch outs.
- Northeastern added another insurance run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single from Gregory Bozzo – he scored Spenser Smith, who hit a two-out single and stole second. He ran on the pitch to Bozzo and scored easily on the hit and run.
- Yost was relieved in the ninth by Jake Gigliotti, entering with runners on first and second with one out. Gigliotti got a ground out and a strikeout to seal the shutout victory for Northeastern.
- It was the Huskies' sixth shutout of the season, the most since the 2021 season when Northeastern also held teams scorless in six games on the year.
- Lane's home run was the 60th homer by the Huskies offense this year, tying the program record set in 2008.
- Northeastern has earned series wins in four of their five CAA weekend sets this season.Â
