BOSTON – The 2022-23 season was another extraordinary one for Northeastern Athletics and the student-athletes, and Tuesday night at the Howlin' Huskies Awards, the department acknowledged all accomplishments, and recognized some stellar achievements that took place so far this year.
The men's track and field team and the women's hockey team garnered Team of the Year accolades after their strong seasons. Men's track & field continued its historic run with a seventh consecutive CAA Outdoor championship last spring before capturing the first ever CAA Indoor Championship in February. The Huskies have been dominant, tallying a total of 20 gold medals across the two championships.
Finishing the season with an 34-3-1 en route to Hockey East Regular Season and Tournament championships, as well as a return to the NCAA Frozen Four for the third straight season, the women's hockey team had another year for the record books. Head Coach
Dave Flint was named the CCM/AHCA Division I Coach of the Year for the second time in his career, and
Alina Mueller and
Gwyneth Philips were tabbed First Team All-Americans. Philips also was named National Goaltender of the Year.
Presented by Director of Athletics and Recreation,
Jim Madigan,
Rhett Burns of men's rowing took home the Gallagher Award, and
Chloé Aurard of women's hockey won the Rowlands Award. Those awards are two of the most prestigious honors in the department, and are given annually to the top male and female scholar-athletes.
In addition to Men's Team of the Year accolades, the track and field teams also took home a variety of awards. Highlighting the accolades on the men's side was
Alexander Korczynski, who was a Co-Winner of the Top Male Athlete award. Korczynski kept up his historic stretch at Northeastern, earning two gold medals at the CAA outdoor championships. He also came back in the fall with another strong cross country season, becoming the first Husky to qualify for the NCAA championships since 2014. On the women's side, Dominque Biron took home Best Female Individual Competition for her performance at the CAA Championships. Biron won the CAA pentathlon title, and was named Most Outstanding Field Performer.
The Northeastern women's basketball team also highlighted the awards for its accomplishments on and off the court. The Huskies won the Community Service Award, recognizing how the team took time off the court to give back to the community. Activities included crafts and reading at the YMCA, Samaritans Suicide Prevention 5K walk, and writing Brighten-A-Day letters to those in need of encouragement in retirement homes. Following up their historic season, the Huskies also won Top Competition accolades for their regular season finale performance. Their win in their regular season finale against UNCW gave the Huskies eight straight wins, and earned a share of the CAA Regular Season title for the first time in program history.
