Huskies Roll Past Blue Hens to Win Series

BROOKLINE, Mass. – With the series on the line, the Northeastern Huskies (25-6, 8-4 CAA), defeated the Delaware Blue Hens (15-16, 6-6 CAA) by a score of 20-5 on Sunday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.

Northeastern plated two huge innings in the fourth and sixth, blowing the game open with four total home runs in the contest. Leading the way was Mike Sirota (2-for-4, 4 RBI) who notched a grand slam in the sixth inning. The Huskies got six strong innings from starting pitcher Eric Yost (W, 2-0) who notched a new career-high in strikeouts with nine, setting up the Huskies for success.

  • Delaware led off the game with a solo home run just inside the right field foul pole.
  • The home run was the only run Yost allowed on the day as he went 6.0 innings, allowing just two hits total.
  • The Huskies responded in the bottom of the second with two homers from a pair of rookies, Cam Maldonado (4) and Carmelo Musacchia (3) to take the lead, 2-1.
  • After adding insurance in the third inning on passed ball that allowed Mike Sirota to score from third, the Huskies exploded for nine runs in the fourth to take a hefty lead in the middle innings.
  • Northeastern sent 14 batters to the box in the fourth, with several bases-loaded opportunities. It began with an RBI single by Gregory Bozzo with the bases loaded to score one as all runners went station to station.
  • With the bases still loaded, Luke Beckstein hit a deep single to the left field wall, scoring Carmelo Musacchia and Jack Thorbahn.
  • The next batter, Danny Crossen, left the yard for the third homer of the day for NU – his two RBI made it 9-1.
  • The Huskies batted around in the inning and Jack Thorbahn got his second appearance of the inning, tallying an RBI single to score Alex Lane.
  • Bozzo's next plate appearance in the inning rounded out the scoring as he reached on a throwing error, scoring two runs to make it 12-1 after four innings.
  • In the sixth, the Huskies poured on eight more runs on four hits and one error. A fielder's choice, a walk, and a single from Luke Beckstein loaded the bases for Sirota, who hammered his first grand slam of the season, his fifth home run of the season, to begin the onslaught.
  • Another infield error allowed pinch-hitter Luke Masiuk to reach base as Tyler MacGregor came in to score the 17th run.
  • Thorbahn continued his offensive performance with a double to center field scoring Justin Bosland and Sean McGee, and an RBI single by Bozzo scored Masiuk for the 20-1 scoreline.
  • The Blue Hens were able to plate a run in the eighth and three in the ninth to cut into the lead.
  • The bullpen also saw scoreless performances from Jake Gigliotti (1.0, 2H, 3K) in the seventh and James Quinlivan (0.2, 1H, 1BB) in the ninth.
  • It was the first 20+ run output by the Huskies since May 15, 2021, which was the double header against Delaware, with the Huskies winning game one 26-4.
Northeastern heads to UMass this Tuesday, April 11th for the consolation game of the 32nd Baseball Beanpot. The Huskies remain on a stretch of road games, visiting Stony Brook in CAA play next Friday through Sunday.
