MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – In a game that started on one day and ended on another, the #3 seed Northeastern Huskies (43-13) lost in walk-off fashion to the #1 seed UNCW Seahawks (33-21) in the semifinal round of the CAA Tournament, by a score of 6-5 on Saturday afternoon at Patriots Point.
The game was suspended due to rain in the fifth inning, with the Huskies up 3-0. Despite a Seahawk rally in the sixth, the game was forced into extra innings thanks to the 100
th home run of the season for Northeastern, off the bat of
Harrison Feinberg, and a shutdown 1-2-3 inning from closer
Griffin Young in the bottom of the ninth. The Huskies were unable to get the go-ahead run in the tenth, and UNCW managed to score in the bottom frame.
- Another early pitcher's duel saw a total of three hits between the two teams, with neither team able to break the stalemate.
- Northeastern opened the scoring with a big top of the fourth inning – it all began with a leadoff single by first baseman Tyler MacGregor, and a ground out by Danny Crossen moved him into scoring position.
- The next batter, designated hitter Alex Lane, blooped a ball over the infield opposite field down the first base line, scoring MacGregor on an RBI double to give the game its first run.
- With two outs, Harrison Feinberg hit a rocket of a line drive to left field scoring Alex Lane to double the lead. He advanced to second on a wild pitch during the next at bat.
- A grounder to third from Luke Beckstein was collected but the throw missed the first baseman, allowing Beckstein to advance to second and Feinberg to score from second for the 3-0 lead.
- The game was suspended due to rain after four innings, with Eric Yost finishing his outing with 4.0 innings complete, two hits, no runs allowed, one walk and one strikeout.
- As the game resumed, Patrick Harrington entered the game in the bottom of the fifth inning –
- The Huskies extended their lead in the top of the sixth inning after Danny Crossen hit a single and then advanced to second on a failed pickoff. Cam Maldonado hit a double to right center field to score Crossen for the first run of the day and the fourth run of the contest.
- The Seahawks broke the shut out in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases and taking the lead on five hits in the frame.
- The Huskies, down to their last two outs, got the game-tying run from Harrison Feinberg on an opposite field solo home run, making the score 5-5.
- After a shutdown inning from Griffin Young in the bottom of the ninth, the game went to extras.
- The Huskies went down in order in the top of the 10th, and the defense appeared to get out of the jam with two runners on to force the 11th, but the foul pop up that would've been the third out blew back into play by the wind and was dropped as the UNCW runner crossed home plate.
The Huskies will face #2 Elon in the loser's bracket finals on Sunday, May 28
th at 1 p.m. – the winner of that contest faces #1 UNCW for a winner-take-all championship game at 5 p.m. to decide the CAA Tournament champions. Both games will be streamed on FloBaseball, and all Northeastern games will be broadcast on WRBB 104.9 FM.
