COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Northeastern University baseball team (37-9) set a new program record for single-season wins as they defeated No. 19 Maryland (33-17) by a score of 9-2 at Bob 'Turtle' Smith Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The Huskies improved to 3-0 in games against ranked opponents this season, powered by a three home run day from first baseman
Tyler MacGregor (3-for-4, 3HR, 4RBI). The Huskies also got RBIs from
Mike Sirota (2-for-4, HR, 2R, 2RBI) and
Spenser Smith (1-for-3, 1R, 1RBI). Northeastern got another strong start from
Jake Gigliotti, who delivered three scoreless innings to begin the contest.
- Northeastern struck first in the opening inning – Mike Sirota led the game off with a single to shallow right field and Tyler MacGregor hit him home with a home run to right field – the Huskies led 2-0 after the top of the first.
- The Huskies extended the lead in the top of the third with a similar formula – leadoff man Spenser Smith hit a single up the middle and Mike Sirota followed it up with a home run down the right field line, for the 4-0 lead.
- Providing two shutdown innings for the Huskies was Jake Gigliotti, who pitched the opening three innings of the game. In his outing he allowed just one hit and one walk, blanking the Terrapins and striking out two batters.
- A leadoff double my Carmelo Musacchia in the fourth was the start of another scoring inning for NU – he was advanced to third by a Gregory Bozzo sacrifice bunt, and scored by a Spenser Smith sacrifice fly to lead 5-0.
- The Terps broke the stalemate in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single, cutting the lead back down to four.
- Northeastern got a big inning in the top of the fifth, with three runs on three hits and an error – the inning began with a leadoff solo shot by Tyler MacGregor, his second homer of the game, to lead 6-1.
- Singles from Danny Crossen and Cam Maldonado put two on, and a pinch-hit grounder by Jack Doyle tipped off the third baseman's glove, scoring Crossen from third.
- Maldonado took off for home from third base on a wild pitch for NU's eighth run of the contest, leading 8-1 after the top of the fifth.
- Taking over in the fourth on the mound was Micheal Gemma, who worked the next 1.1 innings, striking out two batters whole allowing Maryland's first two runs of the contest on three hits and a walk.
- After Maryland's run was scored fifth, entering the game for Gemma was Jordy Allard, who worked the last two outs of the inning, including a big strikeout with runners on to keep the score 8-2.
- After Allard it was Nick Davis who delivered two near-perfect innings, allowing no runs or hits, walking one, and striking out two.
- Working a scoreless eighth was James Quinlivan, who got two quick outs and then delivered an inning-ending strikeout with two Terrapins stranded on first and second.
- After three scoreless frames on offense, Tyler MacGregor delivered his third homer of the night, a solo shot off the top of the left center field wall, to lead 9-2.
- In the bottom of the frame, Patrick Harrington pitched a perfect frame with two strikeouts, his second of which ended the contest.
- The 37th win of the season breaks a program record that was reached twice in the past decade – the 2018 and 2021 seasons both ended with 36 in the win column for Northeastern.
- The Huskies are 9-1 in midweek contests this season.
- MacGregor's three homers in one game were a new career-high, and his third multi-HR game of the season.
