WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – In the first elimination game of the 2023 Winston-Salem Regional, the Northeastern Huskies (44-16) fell to the George Mason Patriots (35-26) by a score of 11-3 on Saturday afternoon at David F. Couch Ballpark.
The loss ends the season for the Northeastern Huskies, who suffered their first three-game losing streak of the season in their final three games of the season. The number five and six batters,
Cam Maldonado (2-for-4) and
Harrison Feinberg (2-for-4, HR) led the way offensively for the Huskies, with
Spenser Smith (1-for-4, HR) and
Alex Lane (1-for-4, HR) adding in solo shots.
- A leadoff single for George Mason turned into the first run of the ballgame in the opening frame, as a wild pitch and two ground outs brought him home for a 1-0 lead.
- Leading off the bottom of the third inning was Spenser Smith who tied the game on the first pitch of the at-bat with a solo shot over the right field wall.
- The Patriots retook the lead on a bases-loaded fielders' choice RBI in the top of the fourth, and extended the lead with an RBI single up the middle to lead 4-1.
- George Mason blew the game open in the top of the sixth with another three-run inning, giving its defense tons of breathing room going into the final three frames.
- After a shutout inning for the NU defense in the seventh, the Patriots got another run in the eighth to lead 8-1.
- Designated hitter Alex Lane hit a two-out solo shot over the left field wall, his 16th of the year, but the Huskies were unable to rally around the long ball and were down six going into the ninth.
- A bases loaded walk and RBI single scored three more for the Patriots in the top of the ninth.
- Left fielder Harrison Feinberg led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo shot over the left field wall, his 10th of the season, to cut the deficit to 11-3, but the offense stopped there.
- Senior third baseman Danny Crossen ends the 2023 season with a new program-record for consecutive games on base, reaching safely in 60 straight games, 59 this season.
The Huskies finish the 2023 season with a program record 44 wins, 106 homers, and their 10
th NCAA Tournament appearance. Northeastern tallied at least one run in every game of the season, and earned their first modern-era Top 25 ranking.
