Maldonado, Cabral Named Freshman All-Americans by Baseball America

BOSTON - For the third time this offseason, Northeastern University rookies Cam Maldonado and Aiven Cabral have earned Freshman All-America status, this time by Baseball America, as both players appeared on the publication's Second Team announced Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies were one of only two programs to place multiple players on the Baseball America Freshman All-America Teams this year, and Maldonado and Cabral are the first Huskies to earn All-America honors from three different publications in the same season.

Maldonado, who earned his third All-American honor after being named a freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball and D1Baseball.com, helped lead the Huskies offensively in the 2023 season, finishing the year with a team-high .353 batting average and 32 stolen bases on 33 attempts. He broke the program's rookie home run record with 13 in his first season, shattering the previous record of eight home runs set in 2012. He tallied five triples and 13 doubles for 45 RBI on the year, including hitting for the cycle in April against UMass going 5-for-6 with two doubles, a triple, and a homer. He was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year, as well as earning All-Conference First Team, All-Rookie, and All-Tournament honors in the postseason. Cam's 32 stolen bases were a part of the team's 133 total stolen bases on the year, the second-most in program history behind the 1991 team that stole 145. Maldonado on his own led the CAA in individual stolen bases, 40th in the NCAA. That pace helped the Huskies finish the regular season in the Top 10 of the NCAA in stolen bags.

Cabral, who was also named a Freshman All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and D1Baseball.com, ended the year as Northeastern's top starter, finishing his rookie campaign with a 9-4 record, and a conference-best 2.58 ERA. He allowed just 24 earned runs on the season. After a few relief spots to start the season, he earned the starting job in just the second month of the season, and ended with 16 starts to his name with a strike out to walk ratio of 69/14. In the fifth weekend start of his career, Cabral threw a 97-pitch complete game shutout against Delaware, allowing just four baserunners on four singles, and notching seven strikeouts. He started the opening game of Northeastern's CAA tournament run, earning a shutout win over William & Mary working 5.1 innings, allowing just one hit. The Northeastern pitching staff this year entered the NCAA Tournament with the second-lowest ERA in the nation at 3.57, the eighth-lowest WHIP at 1.28, and the 21st-best K/BB ratio - all three of which were helped by Cabral's incredible rookie season.
